Julia Witas - Language of Grief
Drone / Ambient / Experimental
NIGHTLINE, Friday night, 5. Sept, 22:00, STWST Saal
Language of Grief is an interdisciplinary exploration of grief and loss. Resonating with a worldview on death as a transitional act, it reflects on the cyclical, fluid nature of existence. The mysterious nature of air is recognized as the embodiment of a life-giving force, giving sound and shape to the unseen. Through an interplay of atmospheric instrumental soundscapes, dynamic vocals, as well as sculptures of breath and field recordings capturing movements of wind and steam in the natural world, sound becomes a vessel to convey emotional states and to evoke memory. While nature becomes a metaphorical terrain itself, mirroring affective internal landscapes and offering a sensuous, sonic space for emotional resonance, the piece echoes these primal forces. By exploring transformative qualities of sound, improvisation and vocal expression, it becomes an attempt to draw closer to something that can only be perceived on a subtle, deeply felt level.
Julia Witas is a Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of music, film, and performance. Exploring themes of grief, death, nature, and dreams, her work delves into the emotional and transformative dimensions of sound and memory, crafting cinematic compositions that move between devouring, dark distortion and poetic fragility. Characterized by emotional intensity and visceral immediacy, her performances unfold as captivating, hypnotic experiences. Witas has performed in venues such as Volksbühne Berlin (DE), Lost Angeles (USA) and Astra Kulturhaus (DE).
