Metaphog
Audio Piece in the mist of monoversal meaning
STWST upstairs
Part of exhibition: open throughout
Metaphog ponders the use of fog as a metaphor and explores the idea that not only the symbolic meaning of fog is unambiguous and evidently clear in the general understanding, but that also the atmospheric undertones and moral qualities are widely shared. In short: fog stands for unclarity and makes us uncomfortable. Is it because of the basis in first-hand sensory experience where our primordial survival instincts kick in? Or is it rather so that this is also shrouded in mist and not as it seems?
The aesthetical approach reflects the subject matter: voices are swaths of statements that convey identifiable (but indistinct) thoughts before they blur together – accompanied by a choir whose function is not narrative but one of commentary. The musical level nonverbally reproduces the behavior of the speakers in that it introduces themes that start out with their own character but quickly lose themselves. So at the miasmic heart of the matter, Metaphog is not a fog opera, but cheat poetry.
Audio piece of approximately 30 min length.
