The afternoon begins with a lecture performance by Marije Baalman, who was invited to STWST84x11 by the Tangible Music Lab.

In addition, sound artists from this year's edition—Francesco Zedde and Volksamt! Klang Manufaktur—will present their projects and working approaches, providing insights into their work in an informal atmosphere.

MARIJE BAALMAN: Composing an Interaction

“Composing an Interaction” is a lecture-performance in which Marije Baalman explains how a modern artist might use her book in the creation process of an interactive art work, in casu quo a sock puppet. Composing an Interaction was created for the launch of the book Composing Interactions, an Artist's Guide to Building Expressive Interactive Systems, published in 2022 by V2_ (Rotterdam). The book is a thorough guide for artists using or wishing to use sensors, electronic circuits, computation and algorithms to create engage aesthetic experiences.

Marije Baalman is an artist and researcher/developer working in the field of interactive sound and light art, based in Amsterdam. She makes music and music-theatre performances, worked with dancers and has made several installations involving sound, light, data and/or wind. Topics that she addresses with her work are the nature of interaction between and entanglement of humans and technology, the influence of algorithms on society and the human experience, and environmental change. In her artistic work she is interested in the realtime components of the work, composing processes, behaviours and interaction modalities. This is expressed with tools such as physical computing, livecoding, digital and analog sound and data processing. She works with materials like (self-built) electronics, textiles, carbon fibre, plexiglas, metals and wood. She also works as a cultural organiser and curator and as an activist to improve the rights of artists and promote self-organised housing. She is a member of iii and Grond.

Following Marije Baalman, there are two further program items in which two works from the exhibition are presented that integrate sound as an essential component—more information can be found directly at the projects:

Sounding Around Sunday Afternoon takes place in the STWST main venue, in the servus club room, and on the maindeck in front of the Stadtwerkstatt.

Sounding Around Sunday Afternoon is happening in cooperation with the Tangible Music Lab. Martin Kaltenbrunner and Enrique Tomás invited Marije Baalman to Stadtwerkstatt. This invite is part of a longer-term collaboration between the Tangible Music Lab and STWST: The Tangible Music Club series is building a network for sonic arts in Linz and supports and highlights the trend toward self-built electronic musical instruments and music controllers in contemporary music and club scenes. Drawing on their combined expertise, projects are presented throughout the year and new presentation formats for new soundscapes are promoted.
